Poda Pitha- A Traditional Cake Recipe of Odisha

Poda pitha is one of the authentic odia recipe. The present generation of Odia children are probably deprived of enjoying the sting of Poda Pitha on the occasion of Raja Mahotsav, which was enjoyed by the all girls. The traditional way in which Poda pitha is used to made is by using charcoal and dried cow-dung cake as fuel, is now a thing of the past. Modern day homes use pressure cookers and gas stoves, even if it means denying the traditional taste and unique feel of taste associated with poda pitha. It is mainly made up of urad dal n rice n jagery etc. But today here I am going to share a new version of biri chaula poda pitha in which I have added amul powder and instead of jagery I have taken sugar. Ingredients 

  • Urad dal or biri – 500 gm
  • Rice – 500 gm
  • Coconut – 1 big bowl 
  • Sugar -350 gm
  • Amul   -1 big bowl 
  • Oil or ghee for frying 
  • Kaju (crushed) as per your choice 
  • Resins as per your choice 
  • Elaichi – 5 to 6 pods (crushed)
  • Bay leaves  4 to 5 broken into pieces 
  • salt as per your choice

Procedure 

  • Firstly, Soak the urad dal and rice  for 4 to 5 hours before you making the pitha or cake.
  • Then paste it into a smooth batter. 
  • Add all the ingredients mentioned above except oil,elaichi and bay leaves.    
  • Mix properly. Keep it for 1/2 an hour. 
  • After 30 mins take a bottom shaped  vessel and add oil 5 to 6 tsp .
  • Then Add the crushed elaichi and broken bay leaves and 3 to 4 spoon of the paste in to it. 
  • Lower the flame. Cover it with a lid. 
  • After 10 mins check it out. 
  • Then turn the cake using a spatula. Cover the lid and after 10 mins check it again with  a knife .If it is not sticking with the knife then it is ready .
  • Now, wait for some time, and  after cooling down cut them in to pieces and served them with  any curry.
