It has been a historic day for India as this was when Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister addressed thousands gathered at Red Fort in Delhi.

Speaking to an enormous crowd, Jawaharlal Nehru said the following: “At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.” In recognition of this momentous occasion, the Indian national flag was hoisted above Lahori Gate at Red Fort and has since become an iconic symbol representing all that is great about India!   As we celebrate our 75th year since Independence Day, let’s take a look back at how Independence Day came about.

Indian Independence Day – 15th August 1947

India, represented by a lion with a seven-headed serpent called Naga, is the most populous democracy in the world. On August 15 1947, India gained independence from British rule and since then India’s Independence Day has been celebrated every year. It’s no coincidence that this kind of freedom-loving animal represents the country – back in 1947, the UK Parliament passed The Indian Independence Act and transferred control to the newly minted Constituent Assembly.

With British reign ending, India had no Prime Minister at the time. In 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as India’s first prime minister. He raised the Indian national flag above Lahori Gate of Red Fort and after a number of years, it became an annual tradition for each new Prime Minister to fly the flag on this special day. Independence Day is an important holiday in India, marking the end of British rule in 1947. On this day, events are held celebrating other accomplishments throughout history which have helped to shape modern day India. The people in India celebrate Independence Day with parades and cultural events around their communities.
