Lokanatha Temple, Puri

The Lokanatha Temple is the second most popular temple after the Jagannath Temple in Puri and is just 3 kilometers away from the world famous Jagannath Temple and was constructed in the 11th century. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is said that it was always submerged under a tank here where Lord Shiva was sitting hidden from Shani Dev. People believe that this Shivlinga of the temple has been established by Lord Ramachandra. The natural spring flowing near the Parvati tank ensures that the linga contained in this small square shaped container always has water.

Devotees who wish to see it can see it one night before Shivaratri on the day of “Pankadhar Ekadashi”, when all the water is drained out so that the devotees can worship the shivlinga. It is believed that the divine grace of Lord Lokanatha takes away all the pain and suffering and people suffering from various fatal diseases are cured by prayer.
