Mahendragiri mountain peak is also known as “The Epic Mountain” is situated in Paralakhemundi of Gajapati district of Odisha, India. Mahendragiri hill is the second highest peak which is located in eastern ghats of India measuring 5,000 feet above the sea level.
Mahendragiri mountain peak is around 80 kms from Brahmapur city and from Palasa, it is around 90 kms. From Bhubaneswar, it is around 250 kms.

Mythology:

Mahendragiri hill is believed to have been referred to as ‘Mahendra Parvata’ in Ramayan where Parshuram practiced penance foe a long time. This hill has been picked up by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt of india to be developed as part of the Ramayana circuit, one of the fifteen thematic circuits included under the Swadesh Darshan programme. There are a few temples on this verdant green hill, some of which are believed to have been built by the Pandavas later.

Top Most Attractions of Mahendragiri Hills:

There is a temple of Lord Shiva and Parshurama. Parshurama temple is below the mountain and temples of Kunti, Yudhishthira and Bheema temples are found on the hilltop. These attracts the visitors. It is linked with mythological stories from Mahabharata as Mahendra hills.
A lot of biodiversity, both flora and fauna are found here. A large number of medicinal plants are found in this area. Faunal diversity includes peacocks, flying squirrels, mynas, elephants, spotted deer and sometimes even leopards. This place is a hidden beauty of Odisha and heaven for travelers, outlining hills and forests.
It is a famous adventure destination for trekking/ hiking people (specially adults) for a mountain-top picturesque to see clouds crossing. And, as it is very close to the Mahendratanaya River and Bay of Bengal, you will also get pleasant sea-breezes.

Best Time to Visit Mahendragiri Hills:

Shaivite culture is found here. So, Sivaratri is an important festival here, the marriage of Lord Shiva, which comes once a year in the late winter and before summer (February/March), is the best time to visit the place. Maha Shiva Ratri festival attract a large number of visitors the most.
You can also visit Gandahati Waterfalls, it is near to Mahendragiri hills.

  • By Air:

You can go to Mahendragiri hills from Bhubaneshwar Airport or Vishakhapatnam Airport.

  • By Train:

After reaching Brahmapur Railway Station, you can go Mahendragiri hills by Taxi.

  • By Road:

Starting from Brahmapur, Odisha or Ichchapuram, Andhra Pradesh. You can also go through Kainpur, or Palasa. If you are going with friends in a group, then you can go on bikes, by enjoying great scenery and trekking. 4×4 vehicles (Four-wheels drive) can be used to go Mahendragiri hills.
