Raghurajpur Crafts Village, Puri

Raghurajpur artist village is the first heritage crafts village of the state. It is a major tourist attraction of Odisha. This village is 10 kms from Puri district and nearly 50kms from Bhubaneswar airport, Odisha. Almost all the 120 families of this village are artists, the art is passed from one generation to the next. The roadway is full of greenery and scenic beauty, surrounding coconut and palm trees. This place is a must visit for art lovers and tourists to watch the creativity and culture of Odisha. Beautiful handmade art works are available in every house for buying.

Top Attractions Of Raghurajpur Crafts Village:

Raghurajpur crafts village is very popular for Pattachitra paintings which dates back to 12th century. It is also famous for making of palm leaf paintings on dried palm leaf, Tussar paintings, traditional masks, stone idols, wooden toys, coconut crafts and papier mache crafts by the artists of the village. Cow dung toys made using husk, cow dung and lime powder are also sold. After entering the village, you will see both men and women making paintings and toys.

Ganjifa playing cards, the unique dashavatara cards are a part of pattachitra category, which are displayed in museums of different parts of the world. 

The paintings are done with free hands and dyes and mineral colours are extracted naturally from dyes of plants. The paintings are mostly of Hindu deities, painted on canvas, palm leaves, and glass bottles. The Patas are also used in the famous festival of Ratha yatra, in the throne of Lord Jagannath and his sibling’s chariots. 

If you want to buy anything from the artists, remember that works of art have their own value and so the price is little bit higher, so bargain accordingly. Take permission of the people before taking any photographs.

Free hands paintings at Raghurajpur Artist Village

Raghurajpur, home to the artisans, is the birthplace Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, for whom dance is a worship, and his father was a painter in the village. Kelucharan got trained in the Gotipua, the traditional dance and became the leading proponent of Odissi dance of Odisha. He revived the ancient dance form. Today also young students receive training in the dance studio of Raghurajpur village. The students participate in national dance festivals and public events. Some have also got national awards.

Foreigners also come to learn the art forms of Raghurajpur village, under RIACE program since 2011.

Best Time To Visit:

The best time to visit Raghurajpur village is during the Spring festival, in February or March. In this Vasant Utsav, Odissi classical dance can be enjoyed. The classical dances are performed by young boys dressed up as women, doing acrobatics to praise Lord Jagannath. This dance can be seen in Beach festivals of Puri and Brahmapur also.

  • By Air

Biju Patnaik International Airport of Bhubaneshwar is the nearest airport. From there, you can rent a cab to Raghurajpur crafts village and Puri Jagannath temple. 

  • By Train

Bhubaneswar or Puri railway stations are the nearest railheads. After reaching the station, better to rent a cab and visit Puri Jagannath Dham and Raghurajpur artist village. Local buses are also available.

  • By Road

Regular bus services are available from Bhubaneshwar to Puri. You can go to Chandanpur in local bus from Bhubaneshwar and turn off at Chandanpur bus stop, Raghurajpur village is 2-3kms from here. You can go via auto rickshaw. OTDC conducts a 2-hour tour to Raghurajpur crafts village, costing only 250 rupees per person.
