Delicious Tomato chutney Recipe, Images, Tips and More

Tomato chutney is a spicy and tangy chutney recipe prepared from tomatoes and other indian spices. Tomato chutney can be served with either breakfast recipes like idli, bara and dosa or even with mains course like rice and roti. This chutney can be stored in cool and dry place for weeks and is prepared from just ripe tomatoes. On the other hand, some also add onions as well while frying to make it more acidic and spicy. This is a totally a different recipe and it is known as tomato-onion chutney. Additionaly, add some fresh coconut or desiccated coconu while grinding. Now by adding coconut would certainly enhance the taste of tomato chutney, although reduces the shelf life of this chutney.

How to make restaurant style delicious Tomato Chutney at home?


  • large ripped tomatoes (chopped) – 2
  • Garlic – 2 cloves 
  • urad dal – 1 tsp
  • oil – 1 tsp
  • chana dal – 1 tsp
  • methi seeds or fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • kashmiri dried red chilli – 3 pc
  • turmeric powder or haldi – 1/2 tsp
  • sugar – ½ tsp
  • salt as per taste
  • For tempering:
  • oil – 2 tsp
  • mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • urad dal – ½ tsp
  • a generous pinch of hing or asafetida
  • curry leaves – 8 to 10

Method of preparation:

  • First of all, take a large kadai and heat oil.
  • In addition to this add urad dal, chana dal, methi and red chilli.
  • Now add few seeds of methi gives a nice taste to chutney and sauté them on medium flame till dal turns golden brown.
  • At that moment add garlic and also add chopped tomatoes and continue to cook.
  • Then cook till the water evaporates completely and tomato reduces in size.
  • Meanwhile into this add turmeric powder, sugar and salt.
  • Then allow the mixture to cool completely and then remove to a small blender.
  • Then blend to a smooth paste without adding any water and also prepare the tempering. Heat oil in a small kadai once again.
  • When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, urad dal, hing and curry leaves to it.
  • Then allow this tempering to splutter and later, pour the tempering over tomato chutney.
  • Lastly serve this delicious tomato chutney with rice, idli or dosa.
